Baptism Racer

17 Jul 2005 12:57 pm
Finally! The missionary game series is complete. From tracting to baptism...it's all there.

The latest installment "Baptism Racer" puts a unique spin on the games because, instead of playing as the missionaries, you play as the investigators who are trying to get to their own baptism without blowing up their car (the "narrow neck of street" is the hardest part to get through).

Really, this game is an artistic representation of the journey investigator's have to make toward conversion...all the obstacles (cars that try to push you off the road, helicopters that drop missiles, dangerous curves, etc.) represent the influences of the world and all the temptations that seem to inevitably crop up in every investigator's life trying to distract them from what will be of most value. (Ok, that was a little cheesy, but it's hard to give a game with so many explosions a deeper meaning and make it sound believable)

So, click on the flash file above to give it a try...as usual it's pretty hard and there are some bugs I didn't bother squashing, but the final cut scene is especially good (I think). (Click here for the full-size version)

In other news, church was surprisingly good today. There was an excellent talk about "obedience with vision." The point was that the Gospel is not just a checklist of ordinances to perform and commandments to keep, but rather the process of BECOMING a better person. So, at the final judgement, it won't just be

"Let's see...Pasto...Pasto...Pasto...hmmm...yes, here you are...did you:
  • Get Baptised?

  • Get the Priesthood?

  • Get Endowed?

  • Go on a Mission?

  • Get married in the Temple?

  • Repent and keep the commandments?

  • Perform at least 2456 hours of service?

  • Okay, everything seems to be in order...go on through!"

But rather an evaluation of what kind of person you have actually become.

I think the talk was especially poignant because I have a friend who I got back in contact with recently who lived kind of a raucous lifestyle when he was young, but when I was caught in a tough spot on vacation with my car broken down, he actually volunteered to let Circle and I use his car indefinitely. It stood out to me as hitting closer to the mark of Christianity and Charity than a lot of people I know who have more of those "checkmarks" tallied up.

My Mom is the same way, doesn't do everything according to the letter of the "Mormon Law," but is one of the most giving and self-sacrificing people I know. She just "gets it."

So I wonder if those people are more on track as far as "Becoming" more like God that a lot of others.

I'm pumped that Jon is going to pull OVERCOME off the dusty, spider-web encrusted shelf and tinker with it some more...of course he'll probably spend half the time remembering how the previous stuff he programmed works. ;)
